My home is heated by a very loud Payne Plus 80 gas furnace. Inspection reveals that the noise is created by the rubber device that rotates upon furnace activation.

What is this device called and how can I silence it? Tightening it? I don't see a way to tighten it. DW-40? Is that safe to use on a furnace?

Thanks for any help, large and small.

I don't see any oil dispensers. The furnace is about ten years old. Perhaps this may help:

It has been fixed. My uncle suggested that the vibration caused by the rotating disk causes a metal part to also vibrate.

This turned out to surely be the cause of the noise.

The metal culprit was found by applying pressure to various parts of the metal plate behind the vibrating, rotating disk. Electrical tape was then bunched into a ball and wedged between a screw and the plate itself. Another piece of electrical tape was then applied to prevent the ball from falling out.

The wedge of tape provided just enough pressure to reduce noise by about 80%.

sounds like inducer motor or squirel cage for inducer motor, try wd-40, should be able to turn furnance off and spray directly on motor , if it has a bad cage inside the vent box u will need to get it repaced .

WD-40 will evaporate and leave you noisy again. If this is a relatively new furnace, you likely need to find an oil cap on the blower (sometimes called a squirrel cage) and put 6-8 drops of light oil in it. If, after oiling it well it still persists, you might have a bearing going bad. Good Luck!

Check to see if there are oil tubes located above the bearings. The tubes are 1/4 inch dia. with a spring loaded cap. You will need a special oil dispenser. They can be bought at your hardware store with the oil already in them. W-D 40 is a good product but it is only a short term solution. Fill those tubes to the top!! This should be done every season.Good luck!
