It depends entirely on why the leg is swollen as to whether or not ice will help. For instance lymphedema does not respond to ice at all. If the swelling is due to injury, ice will help, and how quickly it will work depends on the severity of the injury. The affected leg should also be elevated on pillows above the level of the heart.
Ice should NOT be applied for longer than 20 minutes in any given hour.
