The name Inu means dog in japanese and yasha means demon (its a Buddist term). Also, Kogome controlled Inuyasha by saying "Sit Boy" and she wouldn't control a cat that way.
Now I can't get that theme song out of my head "I want to change the world..."

Inuyasha is a dog demon. His father was a powerful dog demon and his brother is a dog demon. I thought he was a cat once by the ears plus the way he plays with Kagoma's cat. I did research along time ago (about a year) found out the Inuyasha means dog demon. Inu is a Japanese word meaning dog & Yasha-demon. Hope this helps
