I have some experience here. I played football through college and had alot of sprains. I would guess its sprained but can not know for certain without looking at it.
None the less, Ice will help it. You should ice your ankle from twenty (20) minutes on the hour. 12:00 to 12:20. No more then twenty minutes per icing. Next you should sit on your bed or couch and spell each letter of the alphabet with your big toe. Pretend its a pen and draw out the letters. Believe it our not, but by doing this you will move your ankle in almost every direction possible.
You should Ice your ankle after extensive use or at the end of the day. In college we would have to practice and play most times so we would tape it up and then ice it all night long after practice. We used an ankle board to work the swelling out. This is a flat board with a ball on the bottom of it. We would stand on the boards and work the ankle around in different directions.
But ice is a cure all. ice it.
good luck
If its just sprained, you DONT need to see a Dr or a Specialist. Just ice it and do the exercised I listed above.

This healing time depends upon how badly you twisted it. Being a survivor of many sprained ankles in the past I have a few things to suggest.
If it hurts badly go to the hospital. They should X-ray this ankle to check. You could have torn ligaments or cracked a bone. There are many reasons for swelling. It is best to pack your pain killers and take them with you. Better not to take anything before it is checked out because this will definitely make a difference in your diagnosis, except for the x ray of course.
For now ice it for 20 min intervals. This is when that bag of frozen peas comes in handy if you do not have an ice pack.
Elevate it so that your leg is high enough to drain. This helps the blood to drain from the wound and, with the ice, can keep swelling down to a minimum.
But I would seriously recommend a visit to your doc or the ER because without an X-ray you do not really know what you are dealing with.
Do as your doc suggests, do NOT push it or it can create a weak ankle that you cannot trust. By that I mean it will be able to "give" when you least expect it without warning.
Wow, Newname, I love the alphabet spelling with the toes. Wish I had known that in the past! Great idea.
Good luck.

Been there done that..a sprained ankle will heal without a Dr.'s help if you treat it correctly. Alternate ice and heat, take an anti-inflammatory med like Aleve. Stay off of it for at least 24 hours. The guy that worked in sports knows. Listen to him. Everybody, sometime in their lives gets a sprain..is not a life threatening situation. Yah there will be swelling but just treat it nicely and you will be fine. Also, once it does start to heal..wear a good supportive shoe.

yup, you have a sprained ankle, and how long it takes to heal, depends on how badly you sprained it. Suggest you elevate it on pillows higher than the level of your heart, and apply ice packs for 20 minutes every hour for the next 24 hours. If it is still sore, use an ace wrap tomorrow to support the tissues. A mild sprain can heal up and be fine in 24 hours with correct treatment. A bad sprain can take longer than an actual fracture to heal. If you aren't better in 24 hours see a doctor.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Add ice, till the swelling goes down. once the swelling goes down lightly massaging the tender area. This might might help your muscles become less tense and tight.
keep it elevated, maybe by propping it up on a couple of pillows or a folded blanket
rest
And stay off of it, (as in don't walk) for a few till the swelling goes down.
take some over the counter pain relievers to make it a little more bearable. Antibiotics might not be such a bad idea either because even though Necrotizing fasciitis (flesh eating bacteria) is extremely rare, you still wouldn't want to risk it.
if it is still swollen and painful after a couple of days go to the doctor.
as for now, add ice, keep it elevated, pop some pain kills (legal over the counter of course!) and watch a movie.
hope ya feel better!
my sources: below is some scientific stuff about sprained ankles. have fun.

Go to the doctor and have them check it out. In the meantime, remember the acronym RICE
Rest your ankle.
Ice your ankle - 15 minutes at a time, a few times a day.
Compress your ankle with a tight ace bandage or wrap.
Elevate your ankle above the level of your heart while you're reclined.

If its a sprain it will take about 3 weeks, go to the hospital and get it checked out, even if it is sprained rather than broken it should be strapped up properly, but get professional help.

It is probably sprained. You should get a brace. Try to stay off of it for about a week.
