Those socks get in a spaceship and fly to Ceti Alpha Socka where they plan the ultimate invasion and takeover of Earth.
After the invasion, they will still end up on our feet but we can only get around by bouncing on our heads, so in effect they are wearing us.

Seriously, where in the world do they go??? They never show up again...EVER. So, yes, I think you're onto something. There is a laundry gremlin whose sole purpose is to take a sock and resale for profit!
