Sorry COYS that's just sentimentalism. Professional players have always played to make a living, enjoyment was merely a by-product, and the loyalty of old-time players was an illusion due to the fact that they weren't allowed to move from club to club freely under the prevailing contract system, and anyway the maximum wage meant they wouldn't be able to earn more at Arsenal than at say, Rochdale anyway. However, when Tom Finney was made an offer by an Italian club that would have made him financially secure for life - just with the signing on fee - he asked the Preston chairman for a transfer straight away. He was told "if you don't want to play for Preston we won't let you play for anybody else". And they had that power.

It already has done. There was once a time when players played for pride, the club, and the supporters. With the exception of a few (Shearer, Gerrard, umm...), this breed of footballer is hard to find in today's game.
Still, I love my football. The fans are what makes it the great game it is and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Unfortunately, it might. A lot of football has to do with money, but not everywhere. But football is still football, and always will be what it is.. not just a business venture. People watch because they love the jogo, not because they want to pay money for something.

Yes with the help of Globalization. In Europe all,of the Nfl Europe teams are now only from Germany. Germany has began to import American Athletes. Basketball and football are now dominated with individuals who didn´t make the CUT in the Nba and the Nfl. To prove my statement go to the Franfurt Galaxy Website. Also check out the BBL (German Pros ) It´s full of Americans !!!!!

I think that football, despite having been engulfed in the world of capitalism, is still the world's beautiful game. Footballers just don't play for the money. You can see that they still love the game, else all of them would have retired at 20-something

It already has to a large degree. Players put it first, clubs demand it, owners throw it around like it's confetti. It's the uneven distribution of it that will cause the lasting problems as rich Billionaire tycoons look for somewhere to play and buy. Passion, loyalty and even performance can all be bought nowdays.

Yes...but unfortunately it's currently the only way to nourish these roots!

Football clubs need to get the support of their local community to give them any chance of independence from "the powers that be"...

It did along time ago no body deserves to be paid £100.0000 a week and no player is worth £20.000000 the tickets are so high now that an average man can not afford to watch his club anymore

Money won't ruin it. It's the lack of money thats ruining it due to the greed of the top flight players and clubs.
