The head of a snake is at the front end. The tail starts right after the anus.

The base of the skull is where the head ends. As for the tail.... I guess it technically starts where the head ends too. Either that or that or the body ends after a certain point at the backbone.

The tail would technically only be the caudal section (very end) of the snake, where there are not ribs attaching to the vertebrae.
