Help! I need to disinfect my ring!! My platinum band has a row of 12 princess-cut diamonds that is open on the underside of the ring. I suspect that water/soap/gunk is getting stuck in the openings for the diamonds on the inside of the ring. This "gunk" is making my skin break out into an allergic reaction! I know it is the open spaces causing the problem and not the metal itself, because my matching platinum engagement ring (with no openings for diamonds in the band) does NOT cause a reaction. I want to try to soak the band in a dilute bleach or dilue peroxide solution - is that okay for the metal/diamonds?

NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER use bleach on jewelry. It weakens the prongs. Use an antibacterial hand soap to clean it. Or just take it to any jeweler and they can clean it, they usually do it for free.

All of the answers here are wrong!! All you need is a bottle of Ammonia and an old toothbrush. Your reaction to your skin is from the soap that is inside the ring. You might want to take off your ring, when you are washing your hands and face, ONLY if you put your ring(s) in a certain place! You can take your ring to a local jeweler, where they can polish and clean your ring, and if they charge you, then go to another jeweler, that will do it for free. They might inspect your ring before taking it in, so they might take a loupe to it, just to check prongs, settings, etc..

NO. It is not okay. Get a bowl of warm not hot water. Add a few
teaspoons of baking soda. Soak ring overnight. Next morning rinse ring off with warm water. Clean gently with a soft bristled toothbrush and a little toothpaste. Rise and dry.
