You need a web host not a server. Even though you are in the UK, your provider doesn't need to be. You need to find a provider who is used to dealing with novice users and offers excellent tech support (and spell check!).
I use godaddy.com. I recommend them highly. You may find hosts that can do it cheaper, but I find godaddy a good balance between cost and service.
You can call them and tell them what you want to do, and they will help you step by step.
Easy and cost effective methods of accepting payment are paypal merchant services and google checkout.

I am not totally sure - but think I have seen an online shop solution provided by PayPal, don't know if it costs anything, but might be worth a look.
Otherwise you will need to design a website and integrate a shopping site facility into your website, not an easy take, but you could download a complete shop solution like osCommerce, but you will need to get a hosting account to serve this. Does take a bit to set up, but all the instructions and online help is available through their website.
