Well I must say my fender has a more attacking sound played clean than the gibson, which has a more mellow sound but I think that is more down to the Pick Ups, I also have found guitars that when tuned with the open strings are still in tune at the 12 fret, which you can buy in any cataloge store, but would not won't to be seen playing an "Argos special" !!

I suppose it all depends on whether you're a 'managed' professional in a 'named' band ... where image can be all important, not necessarily for the group, but also for the Company supplying the instruments! For example, the Beatles are famous for sporting Rickenbackers (aptly labelled Beatlebackers because of the preference by the Fab Four). You could probably tie any band / artist to just about any guitar manufacturer by their own preference - Santana / PRS - Knopfler & Marvin / Fender Stratocasters - Status Quo / Fender Telecasters, and so on.

Personally I don't like Fenders, my brother owns one and I find it a bit flat. My first guitar was a Woolworth's special, bought for me by my parents when I was a teenager, followed by a Les Paul copy - nice but limited in what I wanted from it. Then I gave it all up for 25 years! Picked up a mates Yamaha acoustic 7 years ago and haven't looked back since. Now own a Yamaha ERG 121 (disappointing result), Ovation Applause electro-acocustic (with the correct strings a nice rich sound) and my latest addition, a Line 6 Variax 600 with Line 6 Spider amplifier - for my type of playing this is ideal. The guitar covers a range of guitars electronically and the amp has over 400 different presets, so most styles of music are covered (Police, Eagles, Hendrix, INXS, Maroon 5, Beatles, Paul Weller, Scissor Sisters, etc). And I think that's the other thing you need to consider - the style / type of music you aim to play ... its pointless having something gruff and distorted if you intend to play country & western!

So, if Fenders float your boat - great, if Gibsons do it for you - great. Who cares ... just pick one you're happy with and enjoy it .... even if it is from Woolworth!!

I know what you're talking about (except what you mean by 'Fender' and 'Gibson' standard?). You can get any sound with a good pedal, but if I were a guitar player (I play keyboards), I would always like a guitar that also has a really good clean sound (the same with keyboards - as much as it can be the same - I don't by one if it doesn't have excellent piano and Rhodes sounds). But, on the other hand, I'm certain that a good instrument can also be a status thing. But, that's just lame, don't you think?

Interesting point. A lot of it is vanity, an old Strat's a nice thing to have, regardless of its perceived 'worth'. With regard to pedals, I remember the old saying 'garbage in, garbage out'. If your guitar sounds poor, no pedal can make it sound better. Same way a badly recorded CD will sound rubbish on a top hi-fi. Nowadays bands use Danelectros & Airlines through cheap fuzzboxes & sell millions, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about!!

I use a USA Fender strat and they are my fav, the quailty is there but there is cheaper guitars that come close! like the Mexican strats, not the same but close :)

as for effetcs, I like the older stuff :) I love the Boss SD-1 (overdrive) which has been modded to sound better :) http://www.monteallums.com/Product_links.html if you like lush type sounds? the Boss DC-3 is the best around I feel as well as the CE-2 (chorus) which I own. I also love delays :) I am not keen on the latest stuff that pretends to sound like the legend effects! they dont come that close! stuff like Line 6 is rubbish!! they are toys that brag about being something they are not! I don't like amps with digital effects onboard as well :) I think vox does the best ones if your into that? but I like a good old basic amp with great sound :) be more focused and find what you like the sound of, not get caught up in virtual world too much

guys who brag about having a guitar that costs thousands need to grow up! because this doesn't mean those guitars are best? its what suits you? what you like? if your happy with a cheap guitar, good for you :) dont let those guys make you feel that you have the wrong guitar :) its what you like the sound of and feel, I personally like USA Fenders :) I will go for the standards, not interested in the special/deluxe editions! that cost loads more! you still get that good sound across the American range, Hendrix used a standard strat. There is also quailty of build, material in a guitar, this effects the sound and the lifespan I guess :)

it is important what kind of guitar you have. its not as important by price as it is technical equipment. the major companies are major for a reason. they offer good quality guitars at a reasonable price. im not saying off-brand guitars arent good but then again there's a reason why theyre off brand. when you pay for a guitar, your mainly paying for the wood, electronics(if electric or electric-acoustic), and the name of the company. therefore, big companies can charge more than they could if they were small, but not so much that they become too high. in my opinion, you can get a good guitar for just a few hundred dollars. higher priced guitars usually have better wood and electronics but im not sure that theyre entirely worth the price. effects pedals can only change the sound so much on a guitar and some things simply cant be gotten rid of by them.

basically, the type of guitar you have important but its important in a more technical way than the price. a $400 with the right stuff is better than a $4000 thats not what you want.

you are thinking right . real fenders and Gibson's are made with skill and 110% quality, but they where advertised with top of the range musicians well guitarist. who bought them because they where comfy with the feel and sound of the guitar they wanted to play . the company's name would of found fame and the quality would have to be top speck. a £200 pound guitar could be played by one of your hero,s and sound really good. so if your good on a guitar buy what your comfortable with, a les paul copy.
