Nowadays there seems to be alot of chav lifestyle programmes on TV and the music industry is dominated by singers like Lily Allen (I like her music, don't get me wrong) and The Streets. I have nothing against chavs personally but I don't see why we should make them into celebrities?

The media like nothing better than placing someone onto a pedestal to prove that it can be done, then kick the pedestal base away. It isn't so easy for the media to do it with real talent, but ask yourself - who decides who is a 'chav'? Is it the individual or simply the media's manipulation? I'll leave you with the thought that the Number 1's of today's charts wouldn't even get into the top 50 in the 1960s and 70s, and the lifestle programmes you mention are, as you hint in your question, pure pap!.

You've got a point there, mate. My parents live in Essex, so I know all about chavs and I will openly admit to hating them. It does seem like the TV is full of them and making it an almost desireably way to be. Look at the state of Jade Goody and that stupid talentless prat Pete Docherty. According to Oscar Wilde and Alexander Pope, this kind of celebration of the everyday and mediocre is nothing new and the only thing our society won't tollerate is genius, I think they had a point.

I only listen to my taste in music. But I agree with you about TV. Shows like Jeremy Kyle and Trisha are the worst who seem to have endless pregnant teenagers having DNA tests and they just don't seem to have any shame about their circumstances. It's tragic and sad what this country is coming to. But hey-ho Kyle and Trisha are making a very comfortable living out of these sad people, Trisha for one lives in a lovely mansion in Norfolk with a beautiful indoor swimming complex - thanks to the chavs!
