I'm at a loss at which new anime/manga series I should start. My favorite genres are mainly comedy, science fiction, and action, but I am pretty open-minded. Violence doesn't matter. Help!

I'm sure you've read Naruto/Bleach/One Piece already. If not read them =). Here are a couple of others you can try:
D.Gray-Man - A shounen manga based on supernatural exorcists vs ghosts/demons. Mostly action. The anime for this just came out so you are seeing more and more interest in this series.

Gantz - Pretty weird sci-fi manga more suited for a mature audience as it can get pretty gory. More sombre then funny though.

Full Metal Alchemist - Another shounen manga, this time focused around alchemy and transmutations. One of my favorites. Funny and lots of action. The anime and the manga are pretty different. Both are good. Start with the anime, as the story is shorter and completed already. If you like it read the manga.

Death Note - This is really popular at the moment. The manga is finished, but the anime just started not long ago. It is short and very interesting. No worries about getting hooked and having to wait for the story to drag out forever. No comedy or action here, but definitely something different compared to the usual manga fare.
If you want to really enjoy the best I would go with One Piece, Death Note and FMA. All 3 are classics in my opinion =P. I still think One Piece doesn't get enough love outside of Japan. It is by far one of the best mangas ever!

Life, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Beet the Vandel Buster, Bleach, Gintama, Trinity Blood.
Anime:
Bleach, Serial Experiment Lain, Witch Hunter Robin, Infinite Ryvius, Overman King Gainer, Gintama, Reborn, Trinity Blood, Peacemaker Kurogane (my current obsession).
I watch and read a lot of fansubbed stuff, so a lot of this can be found on the net, and with the exceptions of S.E. Lain, Infinite Ryvius, and O.K. Gainer (own DVDs for all, though), have watched at least one episode or read one chapter of every series mentioned.

My favorite is the Dragonball series especially Dragonball GT the last Series. Dragonball is different from Dragonball Z and GT because it's when everyone was younger but you should start there because the characters grow and change over the course of the series so you will become attached to the characters more in DBZ (when there in their twenties)and DBGT(When their in there fifties)more than almost any other Anime.

Naruto is a good one and I like Prince of Tennis but it doesn't have much action in it except tennis playing, but it can be very funny at times.
