The best player is Forsberg. He's been the best player since the day Lemieux retired. Between his injuries and a bunch of young stars, he won't be the best player in the world much longer, but nobody has taken his place yet.
Crosby is like a joke answer. All around player? Ovechkin is much more of an all around player than Crosby.
Probably the guy to be the next best player will be Joe Thornton.

The question is a bit vague, but i'd say its between Niklas Lidstrom and Martin Brodeur. Both are the benchmarks at their position and are what young rookies strive to be. Lidstrom plays the tough defensemen position with a high hockey IQ, never being out of place, shutting down top lines, and has just as good an offensive game to complement his top defensive stance. Brodeur has mastered the art of goaltending, even in today's wide open hockey play. He already has a remarkable 10 shutouts this year, 4 better than the next goalie, and he's taken the low scoring Devils to the top of their division and right behind the Sabres for best in the east. Having both those players on the same team would be illegal in the NHL.

That is a tough question.. you could say Crosby or even Malkin, you could go with Koivu or Latondresse, you could even say Thornton, you could say Ovechkin, and yes.. Joe Sakic has been the most amazing player since his early days with Quebec. This guy goes year after year silently scoring, putting up numbers, playing defense and NO ONE gives him a second look. WHY? Forsberg had the benefit of playing around Sakic. no one makes that connection. BUT! Mark Recchi has been racking up numbers making plays being the leader and no one gives him the time of the day. Every team Recchi goes to wins.
He makes every team go goes to an instant threat.
His leadership and skills are unmatched.
Since the early nineties NO ONE except Adam Oates had better numbers than Recchi. WHY is it people don't give him the respect he deserves?

right now id have to go with Calgary Flames Jerome Iginla for best all around player. he can score, block shots, helps out in his own end, fights in the corners, likes to hit, and also gets in to fights.
does anybody know what an all around player is. I've never seen Gretzky block a shot and deliver a bone crushing body check same as Sakic yes there great players but not all around players.
to the guy that said Ryan Smyth that's another great ALL AROUND PLAYER HE WILL SACRIFICE HIS BODY AND ALSO HELP OUT DEFENSIVELY.
GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Joe Sakic is by far, the best all around player offensively and defensively.
Crosby though very good offensively is still too young, he has a lot to learn defensively.
Ovechkin is a one way player offensively like Kovalchuk.
Goalies shouldn't be in this category, they are in categories on their own.
A good all around player is a good offensive and defensive player. And before this season, Steve Yzerman was the best!
