It's all a question of reward and punishment - every time it turns you to stone, slap it and make it clear there is no dinner that day! If, when you order to look down, it does so, give a biscuit. Continue repetitively for one month at top, and you will make your basilisk a representative one!

Try throwing some moles at it. Moles, being blind little critters, can't be turned into stone. Ergo, 'tis one of the few things the Basilisk can eat. This will help draw its attention away from you. Just remember to keep quite a few handy because the Basilisk has a hardy appetite.
Or, just crack the darn thin in the head with a broom stick. Then, run like Hade's. Cheers!

The true Basilisk can walk (actually run) on water. Far more interesting than the fictional one.
