I inherited a 67 Ford Truck from my dad. The motor is not orginal, it came stock with a 352. He always told me it had a 302 engine in it, but i was reading an article in a 4x4 magazine and it described a 351W (6 valve cover bolts, upper radiator hose and thermostat, enters the intake horizonatally). Thats what my motor looks like. Are there any other ways to tell them apart from the outside? I just want to make sure what motor I have.

a 351 w has a manifold that approximately 1 1/2 inches wider than any other ford small block.

The fastest way to tell the two apart is by looking at the block by the distributor base. If the block is flat where the intake manifold bolts down, it's a 302.
If there is a lip of block that goes up to the where the intake is bolted down it's a 351.

On the 351W the distributor looks kinda like it is sunken down a little bit.

also note: the 351 has 4 more intake bolts then a 302, one more all the way around each corner.

This can definitely be either one, since they are both "small block" engines, look the same, just different piston bore. The "352" will be totally different in design. I can probably guarantee this is a "302" small block engine.

Go to a good auto parts store with a machine shop. They can help you.
