He's lying to you. Is a 40-50 page assignment possible in college? Sure. Honors programs typically require one that length or more. However, they are VERY rare at the undergrad level and they give you PLENTY of time to do it.
Doctors don't have to write books. They don't have to write that much at all. That's not what doctors do. It's certainly not easy, but they're not required to publish anything at all. That's what the college professors do (maybe not books, but some writing).

That is definitely an exaggeration. Even if it were true, that professor is off his rocker then. That is very unusual, and I greatly doubt it.
It is true, however, that you will have to do a lot of reading and writing in college. That is a fact of life. 40-50 page essay? Give me a break. I'm in graduate school, and the worst I've had to write (not counting a thesis or dissertation) was 25 pages. As an undergraduate for five years, I only wrote two 20-page papers the entire time, and I was in a writing-intensive field (history). Most college papers are 5-10 pages in length. Many are even shorter than that.
If you want to be a doctor, though, you will be doing a LOT of work. It is not a walk in the park at all, and it takes a long time to finish. Your options will be much less fulfilling, though. In any case, no matter what your brother says, go to college! Your options are likely not much better than flipping burgers the rest of your life. There are exceptions, but they are just that- exceptions.
Good luck!

He's definitely exaggerating a bit. At the very least, think of it this way: if there are say 20 people in a class, then the professor (or the professor's poor, poor grader...) would have to *grade* 20 40-50 page essays for each one assigned. As other people have said, most college papers are on the order of 5-10 pages. Of course, how much you end up writing depends what you end up studying. I was in the sciences, and ended up writing only three papers which put together came in under 20 pages. Of course, I made up for this with either about five hours a week of homework problems (when I was doing physics), or three or four big projects which would eat up a couple of days each (when I was doing computer science). Of course, people majoring in history, political science, or such will have to write more papers, but won't have to deal with science problems. It depends what you like.
