Can't tell you the order WendyWitch, but Sven Hassel is absolutely brilliant. His books have a realism underscored by a deep humanity which is missing from so many war books. And his characters live on in the mind forever. Joseph Porta is a god!
And Tiny is a loveable devil.

Don't recall the Marines ever invading Italy, or carrying samaurai swords into combat, much less straw hats. The Americans in the Tiger tanks is pure BS too.
Hassel made his stuff up as he went along without any real research. His books are as real as the Casca books by Barry Sadler, and Sadler's stuff was a better read.

Couldn't tell you the order but the guy is a complete fraud - he was never at war - he tried to join the SS but was rejected because of a criminal record. Then he joined the HiPo - the Auxiliary Police under the Nazis - ie trusties. After the liberation, he was in prison and he gathered a lot of information from former members of SS Wiking and Nordland, before ratting them out to cover his tracks.
The books are the pornography of violence with an anti-Nazi veneer.
