Believe it or not, you need a nuclear membrane around the DNA for the DNA to be replicated. It si not clear why, but it has been demonstrated in vitro that if the nucleus is distrupted the replication process does not occur. The way the showed this was to take an extract made out of frog eggs (Xenopus Laevis), which is perfectly capable of forming nuclei, replicating DNA and even performing mitosis division (with spindles and all). Then they prevented the formation of nuclei around the DNA with wheat germ agglutinin and the replication was blocked. Whereas if the nuclei form properly, replication occurs. The generally accepted hypothesis is that the nuclear membrane needs to "concentrate" certain factors - mostly portein kinases - around the DNA for the syntesis to occur properly.

The main function of the nucleus is to hold the DNA. The DNA dictates how to make the proteins and the proteins do all the important work inside the cell. Therefore, if a cell wants to do much, it has to have a nucleus.
Oddly enough, mammalian red blood cells have no nuclei, and thus no DNA. This is okay, though, as red blood cells don't actually do much of anything--all they do is carry hemoglobin. Red blood cells don't need to reproduce, as they are made in bone marrow, and they don't need to self-destruct as cells sometimes need to do, as they are destroyed in the spleen.
