Since my Antivirus is always on and will warn me if a virus is trying to get to the computer, I run a virus check monthly. I run SpyBot and Ad-Aware twice weekly, and the Live OneCare Cleanup Scan registry cleaner and Disk Cleanup weekly. All this keeps my computer running smoothly. It's just regular maintenance, always done every Friday evening. Hey, it's due tonight!

Your AV should be running all the time. Doing a full system scan should only have to be done every two months or so. If you are informed that a virus is in Quarintine the run the system scan.
Spyware scan should only need to be done once a month if you have a good one. I sujjest using Spybot 1.4 and Adaware 1.6 Pro.

You must have 1 full time anti-virus and at least 1 full-time anti-spyware programs. Install Windows Defender, (full time ant-spyware). Set them to automatically update and automatically run a full scan weekly
Windows defender

Optional:
Install CCleaner, set to run when computer starts to remove tracking cookies (you can add cookies you want to keep to a save list).

In addition I recommend installing the following.
Run them weekly if you use the internet a lot, monthly if not.
Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster immunize against some attacks.
These are not full time protection.
Microsoft OneCare “full scan”

Ad-Aware SE Personal update + immunize + check for problems

SpywareBlaster update + enable all protection

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Version update + full scan

Spybot - Search & Destroy update + full scan

It does depend on the types of websites you visit and types of emails etc etc you get.
I personally run it on a schedule every day. Generally for a home user I would recommend at least once a week.
