if properly acclimated the box turtle can hibernate outside but first he should have spent most of the year outside before the
winter arrives...they might dig or crawl under items in their pen,
we build a wooden roof over part of their pen then stuff it full of hay so they have plenty of protection from the elements

Is this an indoor pet that you have decided to leave outdoors, or how has this situation arisen? Turtles dig places out to hibernate, but if I had the choice, I would keep it indoors. My red eared slider is spending the winter indoors because that's where he always lives. I would recommend keeping it indoors if you have the capability of doing so.

DONT put it outside because it will get cold because its winter if it doesnt hibernate in its cage then it probaly hasnt had enough food to fell she/he up because if your turtle hibernates and hasnt had much food it would starve!

I will need to look for a proper place to dig a hole and hibbernate, if you leave him in a cage outside during winter he will probably die
