You have to set up both computers on the workgroup. If so, you then have to set up both directorys for file sharing. Also, make sure that your firewall will allow this too if you have one. The firewall can commonly block transferring traffic.
Instead of doing all of this, try cutting a CD or using a jump drive to transfer files. This may be easier then setting up a home network. Good Luck.

If the two computers are in a workgroup together and file and printer sharing is turned on then you should be able to go to my network places and copy or move the files into the shared documents folder on the other computer.

What do you mean you got stuck?
I have a way that may be easier than trying to set up a network just to do a one-time transfer of files:
Email the files? Compress them into a .zip file (highlight files, right-click and press "compressed folder" under "send to")
Use a USB flash drive? Just plug it into a USB drive, move the files onto that, and then put it into the other computer and get the files off of it.
Burn to a CD? If you have a CD burner, just highlight the files, right-click, go to "send to" then select your CD drive.

well you have done the hard bit getting a workgroup now all you need to do is go onto your daughters pc and: goto start, my computer, right click the C drive, left click sharing and security, look for the sharing tab, right on writing in blue, then right click on the bottom blue wrting(network sharing and security)then just right click the bottom option just enable file sharing, then under the heading Network sharing and security put a tick in share this folder onthe network, then make sure there is C in the oblong box, then put a tick in the bottom box then click apply,
Now when you go to your workgroups on your pc click on your daughters workgroup name, and her C drive should be there.
then all you have to do is copy and paste her files or drag n drop to her C drive

Burn them onto a disc. Or you could always set up a LAN between both computers, set up a shared file then transfer or copy the files from there.

Debi,
You need to share out either the directory on your computer that the files are in, or the my docs folder on her laptop. After doing this you can select all the files using the mouse. right click, choose copy, then go to network neighborhood and find the other system. Double click on it, it should then show the folder you shared out, double click on it, then right click choose paste and watch the files fly.

if you can see the files on the computer over the network you should just beable to copy them over, i asume that you have setting file sharing on what ever fold you want to cpy over. and make sure your firewall isn't blocking it, some times they will if this happens you can try to unblock it, or you could just disconnect your computer form the internet and turn off your fire wall so you can cope the files.

Just .zip them and upload them to a server via a free file host like megaupload.com - then have her download the .zip folder.
