I got a 1992 Chevy Cavalier And it wont start unless it the Light comes on. If the light does not come on when i turn the key to start the engine the car wont even try to start. But once the light comes on the car starts and works perfectly. This is very weird.I know this is right because I have tested it. I took iot to a mechanic but he also could not find out what was wrong with it. Im thinking of taking it to the dealership for futher eval. but decided to stop by here first to see if anyone knew what was wrong with it. Also I have seen that in cold weather also wont start. Sometimes in nights also. Most of the times looks like it starts when it wants to start not when I want it to start.
please HELP someone.!!!!!!!!!

what i would do is check the terminals on your battery if there is a bunch of greenish corrossion on the positive battery cable then all you have to do is unhook the cable and clean all the gunk off and rehook it up and make sure it is tight and you will be just fine. Otherwise you could just replace the battery but still make sure you clean up the cable end and will be ok.

This is the prove out circuit that turns on various lights to show they are working and not burned out. They go out when the car starts. If it doesn't come on with the key, the vehicle is not getting any electric, which is why the car won't start. Probably a bad key switch.

Take it in and have it fixed while it still starts. There may come a day you will have to tow it because it won't eventually power up.

When you turn the key, the cars run a mini diagnostic test of all lights which theoretically should not affect turning your car on. But something is wrong I would thnk. There is definitely a short somewhere. Buy the Haynes Repair Manual for you car to help you with this. Also, some Auto Zones have a car tester. You would have t call to see which one does it and if they can do one on your year of car.

Replace your ignition switch. The fact the lamp isnt on means the PCM isn't powered up and not allowing the car to start. The cold weather and nights would make sense also, more load on your ignition and the cold temp is causing a problem with resistance. Pretty cheap to repair, I have seen cars stall out with a bad or intermittant ignition switch.

It sounds like to me that it might be a starter/soleniod problem. Try testing the solenoid/starter. It might be getting no power but only when you bump the car and it comes on. This might be the problem. See if you can reach it and move the wires alittle then try to turn it on. If so there you go. Even try to tighten the battery cables down more. I hope it helps. Good luck.
