Just out of curiousity...I'm not looking for whether or not you "think" a band is, I'm more or less curious which bands really are.

Melodic death metal (sometimes referred to as Gothenburg metal, melodeath or post-death) is a subgenre of death metal.

Death and Morbid Angel, often considered the "godfathers" of death metal, are primary influences on the genre, and its progenitors include Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates, In Flames, and Carcass, with the release of their Heartwork album. Sentenced is also often credited with creating the first melodeath album with the release of North from Here. Some credit In Flames as the band which popularized the sub-genre, some even credit them for inventing the sub-genre. Melodic death metal, though from the same geographic area as black metal, never speaks of Satanism (but some early bands like At The Gates speak against the Christianity or about the downfall of Christianity), but has more poetic themes, which vary greatly. Traditionally, lyrics deal with more expressionist themes.

Only one band has ever been made up of confirmed Satanists (or so they say) although many bands have been accused of it like Iron Maiden ( the song Number of the Beast was written after a band member had a nightmare after watching The Omen 2 they mention God in their songs more than they mention Satan) the drummer of Iron Maiden is a proud banner waving Christian.

The band you're looking for is Mayhem a Norweigan band and they had a member Øystein Aarseth who was a devout Satanist and cannibal. When a former bandmate shot himself Øystein put some of the brain fragments into a stew.Øystein was later killed (stabbed to death) by a member of another band Øystein was once a member of.

Thrash Metal band MOD wrote a song making fun of Satanists called "Satan's Cronies".
