A few days ago a big van got stuck in my yard after it rained. It is about 6in deep and very muddy. How can I fix it so this does not just turn into a big mud pit?

Figure it like this: nothing was taken away, it just got moved around, so all the material you need to repair it is right there.
Squish the high edges around the ruts down into them. Yep...you will get muddy. Use a shovel to shave the high spots off and drop it in the ruts. Once you have it flattened out, sprinkle liberally with grass seed, tamp that in. And wait for nature to do it's thing. And keep outta there till it's dry again!

Well I have done this for customers that have had vehicles drive on Yards.
Commonly called lawn jobs by Kids:
I have first purchased a bag of Redwood Compost,or black Compost. Then level it out with my No. #8 Tamper then get a Hard Wire Rake or Landscqper Rake. Scratch lite soil and then depends what area you live in I use either Tall Fescue Blends with lite ratio of Kentucky Blue Grass Seed. This is best in Northern Ca. however again you must see what Blends of either Fescue Grass seed or maybe Ryegrass seed .
So you also can check at your Local Garden nusery shop for best Seed blends for you. Good Luck>

What U want to do is
-Push the edges back in(this can be done by tamping them down with a shovel)
-add some more soil(not sand as sand will always be soft)
-make sure you add a little extra soil because as the soil gets wet it will settel.
-add grass seed.

If you need to drive in your yard when it is wet use a few peaces of wood(we use 4x8 plywood cut into 2x8's at work) this will put the wieght of thevehicl on more ground

first, flaten out any high spots caused by the truck. Pack down the dirt by stomping on it. if the ruts are still low add more dirt. then resod or plant some grass seed and put up some stacks with string around the area to keep people from walking on it till the grass grows back.

Some sand should do the trick. You probably want to push the high spots level with a shovel so it's easier to mow after it all dries out.

Find the driver of the van.... cut him/her in half... put half in each rut... when spring comes, all is well.
