In most cases a country is a place inhabited by people who share same history, traditions, language, religion, race and nationality. History has proved that countries containing people of many different nationalities sooner or later fall apart and that will always be this way. So, based on history, nowadays countries should become all those places that contain population of a different nationality than the citizens of the present country. One example - nowadays the Palestinian problem is a live question. In my opinion there should be a country Palestine and a country Israel. Otherwise the problems in the Middle East will go on forever. Also in the eastern part of Asian Russia, there are many nationalities that don't reckon themselves to be Russians. Many of them are Muslims and speak in totally different languages. These parts should become separate countries too. Because as I said in the beginning, all the multi-national countries (empires) so far have fallen apart and the main reason is always the diversity of nationalities in them.

California or Texas could easily become an independent state. It has enough financial and natural resources to support it's self. The toughest thing would be border patrol. In that case Alaska and Hawaii would be better suited as they do not share any borders with other states.
The people who live in a state would have to elect a state government that would declare the state a sovereign state. This happened during our civil war when southern states seceded from the union and banned together to form an independent nation. Unfortunately the US felt it's own security was jeopardized by such a neighbor and it started a war to claim those states as US territory.

A piece of land not claimed by any country, can become a country. If the country has enough power, it can claim more land. Try looking up "Sealand" It is technically the worlds smallest country. It is an old World War 2 anti-aircraft platform in the sea off the coast of Great Britan.
The South Pole has land claimed by several countries.
Also, the country may need to be recognized by the United Nations to be technically called a country.

1.California. Too many liberals. Let them all live and/or stay there! They can make all of the liberal laws they want -- and Hillary Clinton can be their socialist president, implementing her socialist "government healthcare for all" ideals.
2.The people decide who becomes a country. However, if they are splitting from an established country or overthrowing an existing government, there would be civil war. Texas tried to secede from the Union, but was unsuccessful. However, there are still those small factions that believe that Texas is not a state, but it's own republic -- that the secession was successful.

Cool essay!
Economically, I would say that California would be the most self reliant. The agriculture alone could not only sustain its people but could (and actually already is) be sold to foreign countries for profit. California also has huge tourism, soft wear, and big business markets. What kills California right now is the high taxes on businesses - but if it were its own country, obviously they wouldn't have to pay federal taxes to the United States.

Northern California.
We have our own robust economy, production, tourist areas, and are completely different politically from Central and Southern California. Recall "Silicon Valley," the Golden Gate Bridge, and the current pharma/biotech industry!

i don't think any should. but who decides if a state becoems it's own country is the state legislature. basically, the senate or whatever for that specific state has to vote on the issue then it can declare itself independent.
