I dont think it is an alternate universe I think a lot of people live in their own little hamster ball according to them. They believe that all the people in the world are good and the murderers are just misunderstood and child molesters were just victims when they were children. Why do you think this world has gotten to the point it is? People are turning into pacifists, the society of less offensive thinking. We cannot do that because it might offend this group etc etc. I also believe that it has turned into a me me world. What can I do to get me ahead of you and what can I do to screw you over that will get me ahead. Then when something tragic does occur we turn into justifiers and blamers. Well it is their fault because they should have seen this happening. It is the so and so's fault because they should have know the kid was going to shoot the school up. And the list goes on and on
Until we can start taking control of our own lives and taking responsibility for our own actions, it will never change and people will continue to live in their little hamster ball worlds according to their perspective.

Neither. Human perception naturally clouds reality if it contradicts our own beliefs and attitudes. It's because the brain hates to be wrong and it will pull every trick to itself internally consistent. So everyone is delusional in a sense.

I think it is that people believe what the read on the Internet...instead of checking sources or reading a book to find the true answer, they prefer to get the quick one that coincides with what they heard on a comedy show...

Its not an alternate universe. Its just that so many people don't have the will or desire to give issues critical thought so they parrot whatever lunacy is being spread by their side.
