If you mend a fence with some one you are said to have reconciled, but if you mend the fence aren't you repairing a barrier between the two of you? Why are some many of our saying saying nothing at all?

Mending fences is about reconciliation. If you've ever read anything by Robert Frost, it might have been the poem "Good Fences make Good Neighbors" - it means in order to have a good relationship with someone, you must set clear boundaries.

A fence is a demarcation line. it i snot a barrier, that is why fences typically have gates.

If the line falls into an unkempt state it needs to be repaired. because the lack of a fence could lead to the unintended crossing of boundries.

To mend a fence means to work together to keep or retrun that which has been broken to a comfortable state for all involved

Actually , when mending a fence you reunite or reconnect the broken pieces that made the fence, closing the gap in which valuables ( friendship, property or animals ) can be safe again.

by the way....... "Burnt bridges" are difficult to rebuild, and you can't cross the river until you build new ones.

Oh wait ...one more " If you CAN'T lead it to water, but you CAN make it drink....it ain't a horse"

Why does a Fence have to be a barrier? Perhaps it's a metaphoric fence that you are mending with someone.

Yes but...in the old days both neighbors would come out to mend the fence, working on both sides. So it refers to working together.

Maybe the fence referred to in this saying is more of the type that you talk with your neighbor over, sort of like Tim and WIlson in Home Improvement. Only maybe not as tall so you can see your neighbor's face.

When the fence is broken that devides two properties you work together to fix it instead of arguing over who should pay for it or who it belongs to
