Hard to say - chess theory evolves with time. So even though he players of before would probably have lost to the player of today, those of today benefit from accumulated science and knowledge. So by pure talent, it's hard to say. I'm partial to Capablanca myself, although Kasparov would probably beat him easily, simply because of advances in theory.

Most people say that its Paul Morphy because he was the best chess player before the offical grandmaster title was awarded
