if your 18, in the USA, you goto the apartment manager and fill out their application and give them 20's processing fee. THey'll check your credit history (how well you've paid back loans if any) and then you give them a security deposit which is usually equal to the rent, and which you get back when you move out. and you GET OFF YOUR *** AND DO IT!

I would start by getting the newspaper and looking under "Rentals" also might try the Nickle Nick alot of times you can find people looking for roommates which may be cheaper moving in with someone if it's your first time than moving out on your very own (It can get quite expensive. Atleast with 2 people you can split the bills). Another good choice is actually going to or calling an apartment complex that has a "Now Renting" sign up scheduling an appt. and speaking with them about cost and what not as well as HOW LONG THE LEASE IS!!! Very important, you don't want to be locked into something for a long time esp. if it's your first apartment.
Once you've found a place you like, you will have to actually put in an application. For this you'll need refrences and a good credit check before you are approved they usually run anywhere from $20-$75 for each application so make sure you're applying somewhere you really want in. Also there's the deposit once you do get accepted, deposit is usually First and Last months Rent up front.
A Niffty link if you want to browse around online for apartments is -
Rent.Com
it's a great site that you can enter your estimated move in date and what you're looking for (price range, rooms, location etc.) and it will pull up matches. *and if you move into one of the places they list you get a $100 gift credit card (they really do send it!)

Money management is key. First make sure you could afford to move out. Then look up available apartments in local newspapers, or ask friends. Once you find something interesting, go and visit. Important, however, is not to take the first apartment you like. Look at several before you pick your next place to live. Make sure the area is safe, quiet, and the neighbors are friendly. Once you decide, you usually going to have to give the landlord a month deposit plus the first month rent before you could move in. Moving is always risky because sometimes you move into an apartment with problems, like faulty heating, rodents and bugs, and noisy neighborhoods. Like any other important decision, you have to be careful.

First thing you need to do is inform yourself, how big and roomy you would like the apartment to be, rent amount, area. Secondly and most important, Can you on your current salary afford the rent amount plus security deposit (usually 1st and last month's rent). Finally, are you willing to take a roommate if necessary. Remember, independece is great, but not if you cannot afford it.
Take care and good luck.

You look through ads. Find a place you are interested in and make an appointment to check it out. If you like it, you fill out an application and sometimes pay a fee for a credit check.
It is up to the discretion of the owner whether or not he finds you to be a suitable tenant.
