Body language in class is essential to remaining in control of the situation.Non-verbal communication can range from a raised arm, to a nod of the head.Creating ambiance within the the class is an instinctive thing.Because you are teaching English to students with a different mother tongue, visual sign language is essential because they don't understand the language, so one has to ellict knowledge from them in another way, pictorial art work is a good way of communicating knowledge, leader students are also helpful in the communication process ,so pair work is a good idea allow each student pair to circulate around the classroom to study the posters / photographs / and written texts that they can add a sketch to ,ask the leader student to add their comments to the board.Asking a more knowledgeable student to assist you is always a good idea because they understand their own language. Depending on the information you are trying to get across to the students ,the message has to be conveyed as easily as possible, So - pointing to something can convey the item under analysis. If you are describing a large animal you can show them a photograph and convey how big the animal is by hand movements .If you are discussing sports you can draw stick people and draw them in different moving actions i.e. running, playing tennis / football etc.,Facial expression is important, a smile or a serious expression can convey a multitude of messages.

Non-verbal communication is the most important aspect of teaching any subject. Its about your eye contact, whether you smile or not, if you look bored or interested in your pupils, the tone of your voice, how you react to their questions or answers, your facial expressions. These all matter far more than people think. Try to remember your favourite teachers and your least favourite teachers at school and think about the things I just mentioned - how did they differ? That's what the significance is.

I think it enforces the spoken word. With younger children the more animated your expression and gesture is ,the more effective the word can be. Like wise the tone of voice and speed of speech..i.e to get attention , lower the voice and slow the speech down..mind you , you need to be careful , if you get wrong they'll think you are stark , raving mad!
