I'm 18 weeks and I tested positive for Group B Strep. I'm scared. They want me to go on antiobiotics right now, but I've been researching it and all the websites I've found said that most people start it when they go into labor...why are they putting me on it so quickly? Has anyone else had to take antibiotics DURING pregnancy....? I'm scared!!

My sister had Group B strep. Her doctor didn't put her on any meds now. But, when she went into labor she had to tell the nurses that she was positive for group b (usually they ask anyway). That way they could administer the antibiotics before her baby was delivered.

I'd call your doctor and find out why.

I took antibiotics for a week or so - but that was for an ear infection or something.

For Group B Strep I have only heard of antibiotics being administered during labour.

Sorry not to be more helpful. Good luck!

I was positive for Group B Strep during both my pregnancies and they never said anything to me about taking antibiotics during. I was supposed to get 2 doses of antibiotics during labor but I never was at the hospital early enough to get both doses.
I received 1 complete dose with both of my kids and since I only got 1 dose both my kids had to go to the NICU over night and get more doses of antibiotics and have some blood work done but they both are happy and healthy.

Just thought I would give you my happy story about having Group B. Good luck.

That is really weird. I wasnt tested for group B strep untill around 36 weeks. The doc said if it was positive they would give me antibiotics in the delivery room. He sadi some people have it and others dont. He didnt make it seem that awful. You better talk to them and find out more info

I'm surprised you had the test done already, most docs don't test for it until 34 weeks. I've also been told that you only get antibiotics when you go into labor.

I also tested positive for group b strep.. they are not suppose to give you anything right now for it.. it is only when you go into labor you get penicilin hooked up to your iv.. i had two bags.. and that hurt like crap... but seriously i would ask them again b/c my doc said if he was to treat me now.. that doesn't help prevent the baby from getting it when they came down the birth canal... but you are right... they are only suppose to give it to you during labor.. no other time.. its useless to take it now nothing to worry about though.. don't stress out.. goodluck

I wasn't, because that test wasn't done until closer to the end of my pregnancy. I only had the IV of antibiotics during labor. I didn't have any before that.

I've never heard of anyone being tested at 18 weeks, and starting antibiotics then... it's usually when you go into labour.

Trust your doctor... you'll probably be re-tested as you approach your due date, and you might need antibiotics during labour too.
