My state, PA is a commonwealth.
There are only 4:
# 1 Commonwealth of Kentucky
# 2 Commonwealth of Massachusetts
# 3 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
# 4 Commonwealth of Virginia

The whole of the US can't join, because to be part of the commonwealth you need to be a past colonial territory of the British Empire. US law prevents individual states joining political bodies like the commonwealth, and i never heard that there was any support for the idea.
Perhaps i misunderstood the question? I know there are different forms of commonwealth out there, but when you say 'The' commonwealth, the one that'll spring to mind is the grouping of British former colonial possessions.
Try to clarify.
