I've known him very closely for over a year and the other day he told me that he loves me on the phone.

we spent 2 hours talking about how he's fallen for me, and how he missed me so much when i stopped talking to him for like 2 months because of an argument, and how he "really really likes me" and then i let him down gently. When i asked him if this was a sick joke, he said "do i ever speak like this with you ever? no, so yes, im not joking"

and then, after those 2 hours, he ended up saying "you know what, you're going to hate me because this was all a joke, i needed research for a song im going to write..."

and yesterday, when i asked him about this so called song, he claimed that he gave up writing it.

Honestly, i think that he was being genuine when he said that he loves me, but then when i spoke to him afterwards, he also seemed genuine about how it was all a joke - so now i cant think whether he does have feelings for me...

This is important to me because when he and i joke and flirt, its usually innocent on my part, and i want it to remain that way...

What do you think?

i totally believe that 50% of what people say when they are "joking" is true, you know, to cover up their true feelings. He opened up his heart to you, and he didnt get the response he wanted so of course hes going to be all defensive and say he was joking....its a mans pride in the stakes, men dont like to let down their guard.

hes saying he was joking because you gently let him down

sounds like the guy is pretty hung up on you!

why you so bothered anyways if you dont feel anything for him??

I agree with all the answers above. I reckon that it was a defence mechanism on his part to hide his hurt at rejection.

Sorry sister....He really loves you. It won't go away. You may need to sever this relationship for a while.

he still is into you. he wanted to see how you were going to react because he was/is worried about how his admissions to you would affect your friendship and if you gave him an indication that his love was unrequited, then he'd withdraw his statements and act like it was all nothing.
