Is she sexist? Helloooooo. DUH!
Opening a girls only school only establishes the point further. Had she opened a school for boys and girls, she would be humanitarian. Opening a girls-only school is feminism at work; sexist.
She does, in fact treat men and women differently up to a point; if men support her sexism, she will treat them as well as women. If not, she treats them like sludge. Again, typical feminsm.
Worse yet, she has a few million other equally sexist, but much poorer people following her as if she were gawd almighty. She's a waste of skin.

Re: people calling Oprah a "feminist," it depends how you define it. In some sense, any woman who doesn't want to be dependant on either a man or the state is a feminist - which makes Oprah one. On the other hand, to be a knowledgable feminist involves some sort of education - formal or informal - in women's studies and issues, which I don't believe she has. She's also engrossed in consumerism treats relationships as a be all and end all, which is ant-feminist.

Anyway. The fact is, girls in developing/third world countries aren't as educated as the boys are (if at all). They have no opportunity to be successful in the paid labour force. They tend to have a lot of children. They do more work than men, but for less money, or no money. Actually, the countries in the world with the lowest gender inequality have the highest poverty rates, more internal conflict, population "explosion," and the list goes on. Gender equality is key for a country to become more industrialized/"civilized". Educating women in third world countries about everything helps a lot more to prevent poverty, AIDS, and pregnancy than simply educating them about birth control.

So I think that you may simply not know these things and come to the conclusion that Oprah is "sexist," when in reality, she is simply aware that by educating women, society benefits, but unfortunately, women don't have that opportunity in third world countries.

I think Oprah probably is a little bit sexist. But really, who cares? She is giving poor girls in Africa something that all the US and UN foreign aid would not. She is giving them a future.

She is putting her money where her mouth is.

If any one person has enough money to build a school in a third world country, I have no problem with them saying "Girls Only."

It's extremely ironic that your question is calling "sexist" when educating children has been a woman's role from the beginning.

Thank God she wants to help others instead of rob others like most "Profit" organizations. Funny thing is ... "Education" historically has been a "Woman's" role. Women teach their children --- it's been that way from Eve (or the first Primate who had consciousness) through all cultures today (Western, Eastern, Jewish, Christan, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and all others).

However, as a Graduate in Economics, schooling one gender over another often leads to poverty rather than wealth. Socially, men and women belong together. We're made for each other. If one fails, then they both fail. Since the African culture still relies on the family structure of the man brings home the money, gives it all to his wife, and the wife then distributes the money to each family member ... well, I wonder how these privileged women of Oprah's school will integrate with uneducated men.

It's her Money and she'll do what she wants to.

No, what she did was awesome.( My wife keeps me filled in on all of this stuff.) Anyway, she got very involved in helping these young girls after going there to visit. She found that thousands of young girls body's are being torn to peices from giving birth before their young bodies were ready. They also have very barbaric ways of delivering babies and with no meds or anything. A Dr opened a hospital there to treat these young women for free and help them to not be outcasts or even worse dead. Oprah started the school for these girls to give them a chance to learn, be educated and eventually be able to go out and take care of themselves and their families. It really is a great thing she's doing for them.

No she is not. It's not that Oprah treats men and women differently: it's that African countries tend to treat men and women VERY DIFFERENTLY. Before posting what you hope to be an inflammatory question please do some rudimentary research so as not to waste our time - and/or embarass yourself. Thank-you in advance for your future co-operation.

Yes she does. But it's for a good reason. Men and women ARE diffrent. Our brains are wired different. That's a fact of nature!
And it's proven that in schools where boys and girls are separated, both of them do better! Boys and girls have different learning styles.

Oprah is the most sexist of sexists.

Not at all. In most African nations it is very rare for girls to be able to go to schools. Boys have a far better chance. Opera is trying to bring girls up so that they can ALSO receive an education and maybe be something. I support her for it.
