I'll be going to school to earn a bachelors degree and possibly a masters, but I have no idea as to what I want to major in. I want to make sure that it's something the industry needs so that I'm not wasting money on college. Any suggestions as to what you feel are needed careers?

The most important thing is for you to find something you enjoy doing. What are your interests?

The worst thing that can happen is for you to end up in a career and not be happy. I don't care how much money you make, if you don't enjoy what you're doing... you will be miserable.

Also, where do you want to live?

It won't do you any good to have the skills for a position that is not available in your area, if you aren't willing to relocate.

Call an employment agency and ask what their biggest needs might be. Find out what the demands are and what jobs seem to be available.

Get communication classes out of the way early. Because it makes no difference if you are in a technical field, or something else... communication skills will help you get ahead.

Good Luck!

Go with your passion and interests. Don't just pursue a degree and career simply because you feel you will make more money or have a guaranteed job. Nothing is guaranteed and most careers are cyclical.

If you follow your passion you will be at the top of your career.

Also, a broad degree is most usefull when you do not know what you want to do with your career. You cannot go wrong with a business degree.

You should consult your school advisor for some additional advice.

Obviously, the communications field will continue to move incredibly fast in the next decades. I'm not talking about your cell phone either! Voice over Internet protocol, wireless communications and networking are getting to the break point with security, worms, bugs, engineering, design and installation.

Here's the good news: The middle level of the industry is so fragmented, they don't care what kind of degree you have. They just look for people who are educated. Not giving a break to the top tier levels of the industry either, they don't know what direction anything is going but generally know they want educated account representatives, book keepers, managers, and president.

What both fail to look for is; common sense.

Math, accounting, finance, business, economics and such are pretty needed right now.
Hospital positions are always good - nurses, doctors, etc. physical therapy is considered good.
Human Resources - great and every company has a department
