Generally, symptoms of underactive thyroid include:
-fatigue or decreased stamina when exercising
-weight gain
-feeling cold while other people in the same room are comfortable.
-dry skin
-brittle hair, or hair loss
-brittle nails
-constipation
-abnormal periods

Some of the other answerers are talking about overactive thyroid, but I see you are interested in underactive thyroid.

One answerer suggests kelp for treating underactive thyroid. This would only work if you were deficient in iodine, and that almost never happens in any developed country.

Synthroid and generic preparations of thyroid hormone supplement are well tolerated, and do not have side effects as long as the dose is properly adjusted and monitored.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism are; weight gain, difficulty losing weight with diet and exercise, IBS with constipation, dry skin, dry thinning hair, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, vertigo, headache, low body temp, sensitivity to cold, sensitivity to light, ridged fingernails with no moons, fertility problems, mood changes, fatigue, depression, and muscle and joint aches.

Diagnosis is usually by blood work. This blood work should only be done in the morning, as an afternoon test could stop a diagnosis if the doctor is only testing TSH. I suggest a TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and an antibody test.

There are lab made medications like Synthroid and Levoxyl or natural meds like Armour thyroid. I have tried both and prefer the natural med.

Yes. Hypo- (low) thyroid presents these symptoms:

weight gain
depression
fatigue
restlessness without real energy
poor digestion- cramps, gas, bloating
swelling in the feet or legs
poor sleep
dry skin/nails

I suggest a kelp supplement daily if you think you have hypothyroidism... very effective without side effects like synthroid or thyroxidine prescriptions.
