I want to ask an ex co-worker for a new job, what's the best way to ask?

The awkward thing is that we haven't stayed in touch. Is it acceptable to ask what's out there at his new company?

I would try to call up or write to see how they are doing before asking about new jobs at their company so they don't think you are just using them. Another approach would be that you want to update your network and let them know that you enjoyed working with them and if anything was open at their new job to keep you in mind and let you know so that you could have the pleasure of working with them again in the future.
