ipods are made so that they will only play a protected aac format, I had this same problem when I got my ipod, you may have to screw around with it to get it to work. Apple put this in so the music can't be shared, it really sucks. You could try downloading itunes and purchasing a music converter, then turn it into a mp3 and then put it into your itunes library. Also if you burn a CD from windows media player, then download it into your itunes library, it will be in mp3 format. This will end up taking lots of CD's so depending on how much music you have it may be smarter to buy the music converter. I suggest finding one from tucows.com. A typical CD will hold 14-15 songs, depending.
hope this helps

Download iTunes for free. It is really the best way to put music on your iPod. If you need a work-around check out ilounge.com for more help.
