The most important aspect of a child's literary development is role modeling.

You need to be a literate household who reads. The parents should be reading and the child should be read to until the child can handle it on their own. (You can continue to read to your child for years...I read out loud to my high school classes and they LOVE IT.)

You need to try to have a large vocabulary and to use as many different types of words that you can. Children pick up a lot of their literacy abilities before they even get to school; it's a cycle that can be wonderful or vicious.

You should have books around the house. Take the kid to a library; reward them with books. Turn off the TV and open a book.

Modeling is really the best practice. If you are an avid reader then chances are your child will be too!

For a child to grow in reading, they need to have a book that is written at their level and has a high interest for them.

#1. Parents reading to their children. Doesn't matter what poem, book, rhyme, story or other literary experiences......less age inappropriate material.
