The U.S. provided weapons to Afghanistan so they could fight the USSR. Afghanistan ended up as a repressive regime offering shelter to Al-Quaeda.

They gave helped Iraq to fight Iran. Iraq invaded Kuwait.

They supported Batista. Castro took over, and has been opposed to the U.S. ever since.

It seems like the U.S. doesn't see the long term in its foreign policy. Have they had any successes since 1945?

I'm not thinking of repair work - I'm thinking of making changes.

Socially, it's harder to change something that exists than to build something from nothing after it's been leveled. So, yes, I do count the Marshall plan as "repair work." I admit, I didn't phrase my question clearly.

The Marshall plan rebuilt Europe after WW II and we helped Japan rebuild too. South Korea got alot of help from us after the Korean war and Bosnia is moving forward.
The problem with Afghanistan is that everyone walked away after the Russians left and the Iraq - Iran thing was just our way of killing Iranians by proxy.

Think of the economic power Germany is. They were destroyed. The Marshall plan totally rebuilt them. The same with England. The same with Japan. It was burned to the ground. We rebuilt it and industrialized it. The same with Korea. Prior to 1950 it was a total farming society. Now it produces cars (Hyundai and KIA) Electronics (LG) and movies and art.
Oh yes we influenced and affected many countries.

Rather flip calling the rebuilding of countries and means of life as repair work. Exactly what is it you want to hear? Why ask questions if you want to belittle the answers.

No, they haven´t... just for the reason that The U.S. government was never able to decide between isolationistic and interventionistic politics. So they did everything only half-way...
But to save government´s face... the action in former Jugoslavia is at least somewhat successful...

Israel, Japan, and Germany...

Israel, I think, is the most compelling case. We not only helped them become a country in 1948, we've also kept them protected in a middle east of constant turmOIL.
