it seems as though the more thats typed the more you will understand what the person is saying but without punctuation and such the whole thing turns in to a realy long sentence that no once can figure as long as you continue to type without taking breaks that is how i feel and if anyone has a witty retort it would be appreciated as this is more of a rhetorical question than anything else sorry if this is hurting your eyes as i was trying to make a point

Well Chanteuse_ar, I can generalize as it seems to be the norm. I realize that there are some older, ignorant people that have either slipped through the system and / or just didn't get an education, but all you have to do is take a look at this site. Are you trying to tell me that grammatical errors, punctuation, spelling, etc. are EVEN between the young and the old in this/any forum?

Plz....

Good point.
I think it is a combination of
1) parents not valuing and supporting coherent communication skills in the home,
2) the media promoting the newest "trends" in illiteracy and bad communication styles,
3) schools not teaching grammar, and
4) speech and debate programs being decimated from the high school and college level.

When's the last time you heard someone make a sound logical argument, never mind whether or not it was spelled correctly, and had good grammar and punctuation?

I agree! Point well-made and taken! The unvarnished, sad truth is that I had a better command of spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax as a 5th grader than a lot of teens today who are graduating from high school! :O

I'm not saying I'm "all that and a bag of chips", but I do sometimes wonder why kids who went to public schools in the 1970s and '80s, as I did, got such a better education in the English language than kids these days. (Haha, now I'm probably really dating myself! Yep, I'm 34, which is most likely "ancient" to all the semi-illiterate teens on this website) *wry smile*

Or maybe it's not that all public schools have sudden started to suck. In fact, I know it's not, because some of my friends and relatives have teens in school who speak and write beautifully. I think schools are part of it, but mainly, I think we are now seeing a generation that literally DOESN'T GIVE A FLYING FIG about sounding like they have half a brain working. I hope they wisen up before they try to get an actual job in the "real world"!!

You communicate as in case you comprehend a thanks to spell each and each be conscious interior the dictionary. we've entered the technological age the position using a digital written medium is crucial to human being to human being communications. to assert that persons that won't be able to spell nicely ought to stay faraway from writing is in basic terms ignorant and stupid. you have to comprehend by technique of now that the international is stuffed with those who excel at diverse issues and nonetheless spelling is significant i'd quite be commonplace because the guy who invented the ice dice than be commonplace because the guy that ought to spell countless words wisely. heritage is complete of significant those who couldn't spell like myself etc they'd dyslexia. (on your added information) why may a persons' view propose a lot less in basic terms because of spelling? each and each man or woman has the right to voice or write there opinion. i'd quite take advice from someone who couldn't spell than someone who ought to do not something yet spell. between the biggest complications interior the international is a few human beings imagine they are extra effective and worth more effective than others.

I understad where you're coming from. I'm one of those "younger people" you're talking about, but I don't type like that (as you can see). I can't stand it when people type like that, because it's like trying to trying to translate a foreign language. It's difficult to understand excactly what a person is trying to tell me when they type like that.

I'm pretty sure the reason so many of the people my age type like that is because typing is a reflection of how you speak. And I've seen (many, many times) how peers treat other peers that use proper language. When you use proper English and full sentences while talking to your peers, you get judged as being either stuck up, geeky, or boring. I'll admit, when I'm talking to my friends, I don't use my higher vocbulary, even though I could. It's just easier to fit in with stupid people than it is to be smart and alone.

I feel the same way as you do. Some of the questions are so incomprehensible that I'm not certain what they are asking or if I can figure it out there are many possible answers. Often they do not provide enough information to give a decent answer. (not to mention spelling or grammar)

I have to agree with the basic point of the statement, but disagree with the generalization of "younger people." I'm fifteen and absolutely ABHOR grammatical error. For example, my math teacher has TERRIBLE grammar. It makes me CRINGE.

I know plenty of older people who can't either and plenty of younger people who can, so it's not fair to generalize.
