I can't get to either of them. They are locked in a safe by my completely domineering mother, who won't get them out for me and won't even dream of giving me the combination.

You have to get a copy of your birth certificate from the county clerk where you were born. A copy of your Social Security Card is obtained from the local Social Security office. You will need to show ID for that one.

The birth certificate can be obtained by going to your local town/city hall and paying a small fee.
The social security card can be obtained by the Social Security Administration. You may be able to do that online.

birth certificate - from the State/City you were born in & social security card - go to a social security office. Just an FYI -In CA, the name on your drivers license must match the name on our social security card, so if it doesn't, you can get a "name change" form at the social security office while you're there.

You don't say how old you are...but if you are an adult....you can go to the court house for a copy of your birth certificate....and call the SS office and request a new card. But no matter how old you are...try doing it anyway. Or perhaps another family member?

Good luck to you.

Contact the STATE OF YOUR BIRTH, the VITAL RECORDS section for a copy of your birth certificate.
Go to/contact the local Social Security Office for a replacement SS card. You can find all this by doing a google.com search.

It depends on why you need them. Perhaps your mother has good reason. If you are up to some shenanigan I say go momma go. If you are not than there are ways if you have a few bucks to spend and can convince people to give it to you.
