Well expanding your Ram depends on two or three factors, firstly the maximum expandable size, you need to find out how much RAM your Processor and Board can take, for this purpose you can use some third party softwares like SiS-Sandra etc this will tell you the amt of Ram currently installed, the maximum Ram to install(Sis Sandra will also provide you with a host of info about the hardware components of your system), secondly it will also provide you with the information about the type of Ram installed on your system,i personally know of three types available in the market, i.e. SDRAM,DDRAM,DDRAM2(also called DDR-2RAM), you need to know this as your board can only suport the type of Ram that it currently has installed on it, the third thing that you need to know is your Board clock frequency(yes the board and the Ram too like the processor have their own clock frequencies), you need to do this as it is unadvisable and worthless to install a Ram card which has higher clock freq than your Board has(if you want to know why, just send me a mail at nikhilraktale@gmail.com)
Important: You asked so i answered, All this information is correct to the best of my knowledge but still i take no responsibility for any damages of any nature to you or your property arising as a result of my advice, use it at your own risk( dont sweat though i would'nt have answered is i did'nt know)

There definitely IS a limit to how much RAM your BIOS will 'see'. Upgrading to 256MB shouldn't be a problem, even for computers 8 years old. Google search your model # for specs, or get them from IBM. ebay is a good place to find used (pulled) RAM at reasonable prices. Pulled RAM is just fine, as most makers give a lifetime warranty. You probably need 168 pin DIMMS.
another great source for RAM is www.pricewatch.com

There is no limit to the anount of memory u can install. The ram comes in sticks which can be doubled up(ie 256mb to 512mb) but the clockspeed must be the same on both memory sticks.
To the guy below, u can get up to 2gb mem sticks now which providing the clock speeds match can be installed so if 2gb is the most u can get then he doesn't have a limit does he:)

Sims2 would desire to have a minimum of 512MB of reminiscence to run in basic terms the backside pastime with Vista. i offered a good purchase computing gadget almost 10 years in the past and it had 256 MB of ram. I purely discover it ordinary which you have a working laptop or computing gadget with a first rate processor, and almost no reminiscence. you may desire to purchase some extra reminiscence. maximum computing gadget or electronics shops will sell reminiscence, and could deploy it too.

You can upgrade the memory of the PC basing on the number of DIMM slots available in the mother board, you can check the number of memory slots available by checking the technical data sheet or the model of IBM PC you are using or you can call up IBM Customer Support center who will tell you the upgradablity of the memory in yuor PC. if your machine is in warranty its always better buy the same from IBM other wise you can purchase a Kingston, Hynix or other makes which are available with retail outlets.

you can log on to one of the memory sales sites like, kingston, crucial and the like, there they have catalogs that list the computers by manufacturer and the model, there they will list the memory type that your computer is using, and then the styles from them that you can order. if your computer is old, don';t be surprised if the memory is expensive. as new technoliges were released the old styles did not drop in price.
