More than likely your hamster was in a cage with other hamsters at the pet store. What probably happened is she got in a fight with another hamster, and those are her battle wounds. I would keep an eye on it, and if it gets worse take her back to the store! They shouldn't be keeping them together too long after maturing because hamsters are known to kill one another once they become "of age".

She was probably in a cage with older ones. Older females will attack the younger females to keep their stature in the cage. She's quite lucky she wasn't killed before in a fight. If the swelling is there for more then 4/5 days, seek the help of a vet, she may need antibiotics for infection. You can also contact Petland and let them know what's going on with the hamster, they may ask you to bring her in so the vet they use can look at her foot. We have rescued/adopted 3 hamsters from Petland stores that other hamsters had injured. They're all doing fine now.

the answer givin above is totally right, i work for a pet store, not petland, but once hamsters reach a year old, they don't like to be together. hamsters and solitary animals, and dwarf hamsters, which many people know are not the happiest of all hamsters and probably got into a fight in the cage before hand. hope this helps
