devin hester is very fast, but the thing that makes him so dangerous is that he has football speed is very "quick". he makes his cuts and moves faster than anybody else. if we are talking pure speed, there are players past and present that would beat him in a race.
i was reading something online where these guys said michael bennett (retired from vikings last year) ran a 4.13 which may be the fastest recorded time by an NFL player....but if it was recorded by a human, there is room for error.
Deon Sanders ran a 4.17......laverneous coles ran a 4.17 when he was at florida state.......santana moss runs something similar......i would put steve smith in this category as well
the 2 fastest ive ever seen on paper with proof are deon's and coles (both from FSU! yessir)
anyways it is hard to determine the fastest player of all time.....been a lot of them, and they seem to be getting faster
id like to see a race between steve smith, devin hester, coles, santana moss, randy moss, and deon sanders (washed up, but just for kicks, haha)........but even a 1 race couldnt determine the fastest guy....its all about football speed....anquan boldin ran a hideous time at the combine (4.8 or something?), and he seems to be doing just fine getting open and beating DBs
YO THE BRAIN: i see your point, but the reason that guy closed the gap on hester in the super bowl is because he came off a block halfway down the field and only had to run half as far, half as long........im sure you were just using that to ruin the guys argument, but just to point that out

Actually the fastest guy in NFL history was probably Darrell Green. He as a CB for the redskins. Deion and Hester are probably pretty similar. Deion was a better skill player, but his speed and explosiveness on kick returns was something the league didnt see too often so they werent as prepared for the type of angles he would cause. Hester however is playing in a faster league where really fast guys play in every game (i.e. Dante Hall) and yet he still makes kick coverage teams look ridiculous. From that standpoint i would say Hester between the two.

Devin Hester's 40 speed is 4.51
Joseph Addai has a 4.49 40 speed
Regie Bush has a 4.35 40
And the no name white guy was Matt Giordano, but he only caught him because Devin Hester slowed down. Devin Hester may not be the fastest, but he has the best acceleration and vision. GO BEARS!

Last year before the pro bowl, they had about 15 of the fastest guys in the NFL race each other to see who was fastest and Steve Smith won. Since Hester's a rookie, he obviously wasn't in that race but I think Smith is still faster.

Are you kidding me? I'm so sick of people calling Hester the fastest ever because he returned some kicks!
By the way, did you see that no-name, special-teams white guy close a 10 yard gap and catch hester just as he reached the end zone in the Super Bowl???
Maybe that dude is the fastest player ever in the NFL, huh genius?!?!?
The fastest ever comes down to a few: Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Darrell Green, Bob Hayes, Gale Sayers, Roy Green, Wesley Walker.

Bob Hayes and Darrell Green were by far the fastest ever in the NFL.
Devin Hester is fast but not the fastest. what he is, is the best return man in the league. More important than speed, is his vision.

i'm a huge bears fan but hes not close to the fastest ever. He's able to do his returns because he has the fastest acceleration i've seen in a while, and hes able to make V-cuts without slowing down. The fastest ever would have to be bob hayes. He set the world record in the 100 yard dash and was considered the fastest man ALIVE back in his day. Also, Willie gault would have gone to the olympics if it wasnt for the U.S ban that year.

No. He's not even the fastest in the game now. I just watched Reggie Wayne run right past him to catch a touchdown in the Pro bowl.

Not sure he is the fastest, but boy can that boy run. He is by all counts the best kick returner. You have to give him that much. Go Bears!!
