I don't know. I have been pondering that off and on all week. I called my brother Earl last night about it. He told me to go to the devil and hung up on me. Which told me by his reaction to that he really does KNOW "what the use" is and he isn't going to tell me. You could try calling him, just don't tell him you know me. Earl is funny. He knows a lot of stuff like "what is the use" and the jerk just won't share what he knows. I am not sure Earl is even my real brother. I always thought he was adopted or something.
You might be able to sneak up on him and ask him real quick. He gets confused if you scare him and he might answer. Call me if he tells you. I am not sleeping too good and I might if I know the answer.

I know what you mean. Depression does that to me. Tells me there's nothing for me & to 'just forget about it'. Many times I've said 'what's the use'.
At those times I must be VERY GENTLE with myself. Not expect too much of myself. Do my favourite things (this requires listing my favourite things in advance - things like, cuddling up under a blanket, reading a good book I've already read before and really like, listening to gentle encouraging music, or inspirational tapes, writing to unburden my soul.)
All is well!!
