I have tried baking soda, spray air fresheners, spray bleach, spray anti-bacterial cleaner, and sprinkling comet in it. I live in an apartment, so I can't take it outside and hose it out (no hose). What can I do?? It smells like old fruit!

Take it in the bathroom and clean it inside and out in the shower. Use vinegar and water, or bleach. Whichever you prefer. Let it air dry completely. When it's dry spray lysol spray in the can and put your liner in. Every time you change the liner, spray it with lysol. If you ever get wet spills in there, clean it out. Good Luck! =0)

I have the perfect solution that I've use myself for the same problem and it took care of the odor. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with some activated carbon filter inside that really really works to get rid of smells. Just hang one onto the garbage or place next to it. I use these also for fridge and freezer and also under sinks, closets, drawers. I personally don't like sprays and fragrances and don't think baking soda works all that well for tough smells. Try this. It's not expensive either. Just around $2 - $3 dollars and it lasts a long time. You can get it in kitchen gadgets sections of stores like walmart and linens and things. Also, I think camping world. There are some other products that just don't work as well.

I take it the trash can is plastic - it holds odors forever , it seems and everything I was going to suggest, you have already done - however, try putting the can in your bathtub - fill the can with warm water mixed with baking soda and let it sit for a day - then empty it, rinse well and spray with Febreeze...make certain from then on you use plastic trash can liners.

Put the trash can in your bathtub or shower. Fill it with hot water and white vinegar. Let it soak for about an hour. Rinse and dry. Put a product called Fridge-It® in the bottom, before you put in a trash liner. It is a naturally activated charcoal odor absorber.
They usually last about 6 months.
