Why should we nowadays refer to someone as Sir Elton for example. And Sir David Beckham. What do you think of MBEs?

Dated? Yes. I think some of the other honours and awards should be kept on. I'd rather like to get an OBE.
I don't know how I'd go about fulfilling my childhood dream of being invested as an Earl, though. I must look into it.
I'd die a happy man if I knew my obituary would read 'Earl, OBE'.
Okay, so Bill Oddie did the 'earlobe' joke back in the Goodies days, I still think it's funny.

I have no title and even the bin man calls me mate but i think it wonderful that people will try their hardest to get called Sir or Lady and have a tete a tete with our Queen. It is a very good system and it doesnt cost the country much to organise and it keeps the Queen busy

Why not? They're an honour people supposedly get given for service to society, and that's a good thing. Yes they get given to rock stars and football players for no apparent reason, but that's not an argument against honours in general, the majority aren't famous, it's just an argument about them being given out for no reason.
As for being outdated, I'd say it's historic, and that it's survived centuries of turmoil says something for it.

most people i now who have been knighted wont allow me to call them sir, there not as important as they used to because blair has devalued them ( much like the whole country) but it is a mark of respect to the old boys who have them for good work done, i dont begrudge them the honour, i accept there are one or two who are pompous with it, i call those MR TO p8ss them off

We should have knighthoods, the only problem is the whole honours system has been devalued.

classist nonsense.... sort of like calling yourself "Professor" or "Dean" or "Mrs." I always cringe when I hear somebody say, straight-faced, "Hi, I'm Reverend McLean" or "I'm Professor Jones".... come on-- you're with adults-- you probably have a first name.
