I've been out of high school for 15 years, and graduation was when my happiness started. I went to college, made great friends, and forged a terrific life for myself. After I left home, I took charge of my own life, and made it just how I want it. That was when my life began on MY terms.
Now go be happy!

When I was in school, both elementary and high school, I used to be beleaguered by the feeling that the school owned me. Other students confided more or less the same thoughts. A lot of teachers, even in high school, used to talk to the students somewhat condescendingly. I sometimes felt that they liked to tell the students what to do just to control them. After I had walked away from the school yard for the last time, at the end of Grade twelve, it occurred to me that the situation was all over, and it was a bit of a relief.
However, I was also hit with the fact that from then on I was more in control of my own life and future, and that I would be burdened more with the responsibility of making my own decisions. Up to the end of high school, most of my decisons had been made for me by someone else. That particular realization thus was rather scary. I felt that I was now in control of my own destiny, and the thought was rather daunting.
For the most part, it felt good. I felt that I had more freedom. However, maybe about four months after finishing high school I ran into this young girl who was still in grade twelve at the bus stop. She asked me,"How does it feel to be out of high school? Is it scary?", and I had to admit that yes, it was scary! (especially initially, and I sometimes wanted to be back there in a greater state of comfort) I remember that incident well because it really validated for me, like nobody I can recall previously had done, that being out of high school was scary.
After I had been out of high school for a while, the kids who had once intimidated me no longer looked quite so cool to me, as I became exposed to a wider reference group. Overall, being out of high school has been a positive experience.

I actually really enjoyed school. I've been out for 12 years. I had some hard times after HS, so I would say I liked HS better.
When I was 25 I was in a boot camp like program at my church. They had our days packed with stuff to do. We had no free time, tons of homework and responsiblities to complete. It sounds awful, but what I discovered after I got out, was that there is so much freedom within the walls of a structured program like that. I was busy, I was productive, and I never wasted time on things that didn't matter. Now that I'm out, I sit around watching tv wishing I had something good to do. I was given my schedule, someone else set up my volunteer work for me, someone gave me work to do.... I think it is way easier to live like that, and more fulfilling.
School gives at least a part of that kind of life. The structure, the schedule and all that is great for kids. Behavior is better at school because they keep busy. When you get home and have nothing to do, that's when you can get into trouble.

High School was terrible but college was an entirely different experience and enjoyed the challenges there.

Well, it was definitely easier in high school but I'm glad I'm out. It may be more challenging, but that's real life and sooner or later you have to deal with it.
