Gettysburg....nearly 51,000 dead, almost as much as were lost in the Vietnam War.

Chicamauga: 34,000 dead from both sides.

The main cause of war deaths during the civil war were from outdated Napoleonic tactics which went up against advanced (or at least more rapid fire) artillery, musketry and rifle fire. Napoleonic tactics is where massed assaults were made by infantry, often over open ground, standing, firing, marching and charging. The cannister fire from cannons and musketry fire from behind entrenched lines created gaping holes in the charging formations.

Added to the death toll were the poor medical treatment existing at the time.

Battle of Shiloh -plenty of frontal assaults
Battle Of Antietam- good camouflage because of the corn field
Battle of the Wilderness- in tight fighting a lot of soldiers were easily trapped in the wooded glades
Battle of Gettysburg- wide open spaces with hills where cannons could get easy shots at an oncoming regiment and cavalry was at a disadvantage at the end at Cemetery Ridge. there was heavy wooded area on the second day of the battle where a ton of lives were lost
